08.11.2023I loved the first half of Edgerunners so much, but once the party started dying off I checked out.
I know that one of the core tenets of cyberpunk is that life is cheap and no one gets out alive, so I've always wanted to see a story where the party can walk right up to that line but actually manage to pull themselves back.
Like Melon said, the lessons were right there in front of the kid's eyes but he didn't learn from them. And he had several people showing him humanity and begging for him to open up! Even if it leaves them slightly broken, being able to stop the cycle would be the biggest "win" in a cyberpunk show in my eyes.

08.11.2023A Mel video essay of a show I've never watched? Time to sit down and enjoy
Animesh Dwivedi
08.11.2023Not only David Martinez, it seems to be the case for all night city legends be it V or Silverhand too. Its always about dying in a grand way showing the middle finger to whoever is in control. But thats all the effect it ever has. Corpos stay where they are not even flinching. I feel like my boi V (Spoilers ahead) tried to go ageah of the crowd with his Goal of being a "LIVING" Legend instead of a martyred one and thats what NC needs. Chooms that grab power and keep it.

08.11.2023Heads up this show was directly worked on with mike pondsmith the show was definetly meant for dub not sub the only reason it liekly has a dub is because studio trigger made it and they know their markets the dialog is very in universe and makes sense in an american style i mean the show even takes place in california i beleive unlike most anime which have a japanese understanding of culture and slang also edrunners are people who put their life on the edge for others (mercs) its not just davids group

05.11.2023I don't think Japanese was its intended language, even if it was original language. Cyberpunk as setting has its vocabulary build around speaking English, so some things in Japanese sounds kinda off to me. Also English version is so good, I'm really convinced it was the preferred language that the show was written in.
Most anime are written for Japanese audience first, i don't feel like this was the case here
Side Tracker
05.11.2023Yeah no fully disagree.
Irregardless of the producer, the show's original language is English because the native dialect of mixed English Jamaican/Afro Caribbean Creole plua sci fi futuristic words with its idioms and slang is completly lost in Japanese as it doesnt have a way to translate the language spoken in Night City.
Michael Pondsmith created the setting in California with all those influences plus a tinge of Japanese.
This is why the Anime is, ironically enough, dubbed in Japanese.

05.11.2023It's one of those things that I understand that this couldn't have a happy ending, and if I knew that going in, I probably wouldn't have watched it. It's beautiful, it's good, but I tend to be selective with my tragedies. I was someone who couldn't really get into Lucy, but loved everyone else so when she was the only one left of the original crew, it felt more hollow than impactful since I wasn't that invested in her. If Rebecca made it out, I feel like I'd like the overall product better. Falco got to live! But that's just wish fufillment and it might've taken away from the final product.

05.11.2023A really cool detail i noticed because of your observation of how much "humanity" david has in the beginning of the series (idk if this was intentional on the writers part) – In the tabletop RPG, there is a stat called Humanity, which is in direct relation to the character's empathy and kindness. This stat is reduced everytime you chip in a cyberware. If this goes way down, you turn cyberpsycho and give away the control of your character. SO, the more humanity you have, the more cyberware you can install, which is why David had such a high affinity for cyberware. He stripped away all of that, for the sake of the ones he loved. To protect them, like Maine taught him. None of this was his fault. In a world where the only way to survive is give away your humanity to the cold and cruel machine, that world is at fault. The most haunting part is this is perfectly in line to world we live in.

04.11.2023Cyberpsychosis has more nuance than what you described but that’s attributed to the show kinda expecting you to know a lot of its foundations from the material is based from. I’d say it’s less tied to your past and more tied to a strong desire for something. David’s fall broke me and in his moments of insanity he still found it his heart to go through with making someone else dream possible and then you think about it and he never lived for himself.
I mourned David the way I mourned for Ace, and pervy toad sage.

03.11.2023I was a bit dissapointed in the lack of context concerning the actual creator of Cyperbunk and the initial tabletop genre it’s based off of.

03.11.2023I loved this deep dive! I feel like along the same vein of exploring humanity within the sci-fi genre, maybe Netflix's "Pluto" would be a nice short series to talk about in the future as it's actually quite enjoyable and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

03.11.2023Fun fact: the show is based off the game, but the game is based off of the tabletop game!
Its a fascinating tabletop, but its interesting how the game has distanced itself from the tabletop. The tabletop had some level of ableism with a loss of humanity with any type of resolution for disabilities. Its cool how you voiced how its a perspective of a dystopia through the effect of paychological cybernetics and the lack of emotions they can have compared to a human touch.

02.11.2023I really liked this show and I appreciate that the people behind it took the risk of having the protagonist sacrifice himself.
My biggest problem with it, is I did not like the main romance. The main leads didn't seem to have much chemistry, they felt like a codependent couple, and I'm nkt a big fan of couples where the foundation of there relationship is built on helping each other with there hardships. Doing that is an important of a relationship but it shouldn't be main aspect of a religion.
The character of Lucy felt like fanfiction that was designed to be everything the protagonist wants which is a woman that loves him, can help him, and think she needs him.
PS: Rebecca is best girl because she remains fun despite going through tramua and she is 1 of the few characters in anime that has a love story that she accepts wasn't meant to be.

02.11.2023I see… so Cyberpunk is about Sanji breaking the Germa 66 transformation can – the rejection of artificial enhancements to avoid losing yourself!

02.11.2023The reason the subtitles were based off the english version is because it's a franchise that's primarily englophone from the start, and that includes the slang developped in it.

02.11.2023Edgerunners is so mediocre that its quite fitting and amusing how them mediocre consumers enjoy it ^^
Francesco Paolini
02.11.2023I don't think that the fact that you know what is going to happen to the characters is a weak point. On the contrary you know that everything is gonna end up in flames but you cannot stop watching it. In a way we are like David in the first episode, watching a tragedy happen
Truth_810
02.11.2023Weren’t both the English and Japanese voice acting for this screened at the same time? Is she saying Japanese is the original language because it’s a Japanese company? I thought this was initially intended for a western audience so wouldn’t English be the way this was meant to be experienced?

02.11.2023Funfact: you can argue that there is no one original dubbing for Egderunners, but actually three due to it being created by people from Poland, Japan, and USA.
