What if I told you the best character in the show is also the most tragic one?
In this video, I’ll talk about what makes Rebecca so interesting and unique.
Why she’s the best-written character and how she didn’t deserve the fate, she ultimately suffers in Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Make sure to let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

The Saint of killers
16.11.2022if Rebecca knew what David did to that woman in arasaka towers she wouldn't have agreed to tag along to save lucy. she would have seen he was already too far gone. he's just like the cyber psycho who killed Pilar. left a young man with a bright future ahead of him without a mother. the cycle will repeat.

14.11.2022It was funny to look at rebcca fly from the recoil of the shotgun because it was out of context. Truely, there was a reason she was agressive

14.11.2022First: Love that you said "alternative universe" instead of "alternate," that always drives me crazy.
Second: This is a very astute review in general, and opened my eyes to things I'd previously felt oddly about. David is an obviously-tragic character in an obviously-tragic setting; it doesn't take much work to guess how his arc will end. Becca is a Traditional Hero dressed in Sidekick clothes, so when the aforementioned tragic setting does her dirty, it feels unnatural, wrong.

14.11.2022People keep on saying they watch the sub and I’m like the fuck the dub is so much better

14.11.2022Best character agreed. Every character in this show is pretty tragic and I appreciate that, because it shows overwhelmingly that there are consequences for their actions and a lesson to be learned for each of them. Rebecca’s death is the one that hurts the most because she doesn’t go psycho or doing anything selfish , she just dies protecting her friend.

14.11.2022Nah. IMO its still David

14.11.2022There is a lot of focus on Rebecca but honestly, most of the characters were very well done. Falco was really the only one that felt tacked on and is infinitely forgettable. I will agree that Rebecca is probably the most tragic. Everyone else pretty much caused their own destruction, even Lucy who survived, but lost the only person she every really connected to. Rebecca, on the other hand, died because of her loyalty and feelings for David.

12.11.2022Might have been better if you showed it in English.

12.11.2022Agreed, do not like the ending for them killing Rebecca so cheaply…

12.11.2022This review was not good. Maybe the reviewer laked agency. Lol

12.11.2022Complaining that Rebecca didn't get the death she deserved is missing the point. Death in Edgerunners is tragic brutal and pointless.

12.11.2022See that's the beauty of this story, its reality, and nightcity in general. This story wasn't really about any of them, not even David; wasnt even a special story trying to tell you a message, unless you grasp for straws like most humans do, because it happens to everybody in nightcity. But it's rather, just a tale of icarus(the edgerunners) getting burned by their own choices of flying to close to the sun(chasing the dream and riches that nightcity can supposedly provide).

12.11.2022in my opinion Maine is by far the best character in the show, and episode 6 is the best one because they flesh his character out and the ending of that episode just hits different

12.11.2022I would rather have watched a show about the mother of D. A paramedic straddling the divide between the law and the criminal undergound, saving people while selling off cyberware she steals from corpses. All to see her son through to a better life. It would be even more interesting if she doesnt die, but her son drops out, joins the gang she knows and are friends with. And then slowly see her friends and then her son go the way of cyberpsychosis. That sounds alot more interesting.

12.11.2022I don't know about tragic… unexpected.. yeah… but tragic? Not really? The world (and anime) itself shows us how trivial life is when they are doing their jobs.. her brother gets offed randomly and then she quite literally gets offed randomly (sort of?) as well. It is the cycle and while sad, is not unexpected and follows with the line of death not being particularly poignant or deserving of hind-sight or reminiscing over.. it happens and you have to move on and if she had sat and thought about her brother or Maine for any period of time she might have come to the conclusion David would end up getting her killed as well.. and if she didn't want that, she would have left.

12.11.2022i think her character, while diving pointlessly was the point. having no agency was the point, it is the reality that they all lived. They could ket killed at any point for no reason and nothing they did changed anything
What Is VR?
11.11.2022Its ok! Rebecca wins, her and david are together now

11.11.2022totally agree. Rebecca was a great character. her biggest mistake was giving her heart to a selfish prick like David

11.11.2022A sense of duty is not a lack of agency. Or if it is, agency isnt as important as people make it out to be. Duty is good, even is its involuntary.

11.11.2022This might be a hot take… But really consider how she is, how she does things. Loud, fast, and done is how she likes it. Thats how her death is, and i mean dont get me wrong i wish she didnt die either but like… Well one as for the real reason she died it cause their aint no way the people in charge of the game are gonna have a world with rebecca in it where we can see her. As for the reason I CHOOSE to believe, simply put it helps to think of her death as the way she herself would want the story to end(i mean the alternative would be some shit like him and lucy saying how much they love eachother and then probably rebecca putting him out of his misery and breaking her little loli heart).

11.11.2022If it wasn't for Rebecca I wouldn't have watched Cyberpunk EdgeRunners. I love her and find her as an amazing character and wish she was a bit more in the anime.

11.11.2022I still can't see how she's the best written character, even Maine's better

11.11.2022I still don’t think her fate was the worst
this is so sad
09.11.2022i’m not gonna lie i’ve accepted his death but from the beginning of the show they keep making it sound like he’s special all the way up until the end, he never has a real full character arc because when he should’ve had it (after maine died) we skipped ahead giving david’s character a physical appearance change but not much of a mental one that he desperately needed. my point is and what i really hope for is for them to continue this series and finish the plot thread of david being special by bringing him back to life and making lucy help him regain his humanity. i don’t think this will happen at all don’t get me wrong but in a perfect universe it would
Dr.iDAREu
09.11.2022I'm not so sure she "lacked agency". She chose what she chose, we don't have to like it, but it doesn't mean she didn't chose it herself as a character.

09.11.2022Happy ending. Wrong city, wrong people.

09.11.2022shallow understanding of the show and character development. Tbh most of the characters didn't deserve their fate, except for kiwi. lucy is BY FAR the saddest character in the show.
Nelson Smith
09.11.2022Another reason that people feel for Rebecca and that also make her a tragic character is that a lot of people know what it's like to have feelings for someone and not have those feelings returned in any way; worse still to have those feeling for someone that ultimately isn't worth it.

09.11.2022I wanna believe she will come back, somehow, as a robot version or something, anything! I need her back!

09.11.2022Something I noticed the other day discussing Edgerunners with my coworker. Every character that dies, does so without compromising or giving up on their core value/dream. Some even die because of it.
Pilar: To always be the biggest, loudest guy in the room. Dies trying to boast to the wrong guy at the wrong time.
Dorio: To always support Maine and be by his side no matter what. She did so to the very end.
Maine: For some unknown reason he felt compelled to keep running from his humanity and get stronger. In the end, this obviously spelled his death.
Kiwi: Like her or not, she stayed true to herself: Never Trust Anyone in Night City. She lived by those words, and Ironically died for trusting Faraday.
Rebecca: She lived to support her crew, both physically and emotionally. Got new implants to fight better, and took her brother's spot and party entertainment. In the end, ride or die, it was tragically both.
David: He sought only to fulfill one thing. Lucy's dream. Everything in his life came back around to that, and to a lesser extent, serving the wishes of others over his own. Even going so far as sacrificing himself on the chance that all the rest may survive.
The notable outlier is Lucy. The only one to survive(outside of Falco), and the only one to change their goals. No longer did she want to go to the moon. She just wanted to stay with David and keep him safe, but for whatever reason, she never told him, or if she did, he didn't understand. She lives on with her new dream dead, and instead fulfill Davids dream and finally go to the moon.

08.11.2022This story is mostly about being true to oneself, without tying yourself to external sources (be it other people or tools) to find both your own path to fulfilment and the strength to pursue it. Becca didn't deserve her end in a "moral" sense, but she "deserved" it in the way her choices relate to the point of the story. Sometimes situations become beyond your reach to save, and by staying immersed in them you will only drag yourself down. "Don't throw pearls at swines" is the only choice that allows you to be true to yourself in cases like these. A hard choice, because abandoning someone you care about feels like shit, but sometimes it has to be done for your own sake, because those people will (even if unwillingly) bring you with them as they jump off the metaphorical cliff. So, basically, according to the story's thematic viewpoint, Becca "deserved" her end because she relied on her crew for a purpose, and therefore couldn't abandon them, when taking care of her own self would have required doing so. Her agency was about seeing herself out of a situation beyond her control, and that's what's left for most of us to do in certain life situations as well.

08.11.2022Rebeccas not the most tragic character at all. Because she had zero disillusions about dying and died exactly the way she wanted to. Her unrequited love for David was also far less tragic than Lucy's reciprocated love for David. The most tragic character by far was Lucy because she had to live with losing everyone she cared about while knowing they sacrificed themselves for her. The only thing tragic about Rebecca is that she didnt have a bigger part in the series.

08.11.2022David is the best character and most tragic in the series obviously. Being the main character with a tragic storyline that is way more fleshed out than the rather small in comparison bits we get with Rebecca(or any other character for that matter)there is no comparison

08.11.2022It's crazy how she hid the sandivastan she had installed till the very end there. I heard she went on a live a happy life outside the city after that.
