I do like how the anime ties into the game without tons of exposition or heavy handed references. You can watch the anime without any knowledge of the game and not be any of the wiser. But if you do play then game you can see tons of references and Easter eggs. It pulls you into the world without any backstory or narration, it just gives you the world as it is, in all its beauty and ugly. It is a must see for anyone who enjoys the genre.
Edgerunners really benefited from being a unique story within a game world. It probably would have sucked if it was a retelling of the game's storyline. Same with Arcane. It allows the story to be crafted for the medium. Most movie adaptations of games try to retell same story as the game and that can't be done in 2 hours. Games take 20+ hours to tell their story.
Not sure why it is being hyped this much. It is mediocre at best. And while it's an unpopular opinion, I think anime was the wrong medium of choice for Cyberpunk in general. It would've been okay if they would've left out all the dumb ass anime tropes but they didn't. We have our generic emo main character, generic emo love interest, generic emo crew of sidekicks and the loli which was actually the most interesting personality of them all which tells a lot about the quality of this anime in itself. The only name I recall is Kiwi and I have no idea why. Everyone was just so bland and generic. Over the top violence doesn't safe everything.
Might be Anime of the year if it wasn't for Made in Abyss Season 2 or Ultra Romantic. Honestly its not even a competition for me when it comes to Made in Abyss. But for NEW shows this year, maybe
It's anime of the year until after ep 6 where the show starts to fall on its face. And David makes all the same mistakes he just WATCHED Maine make. He even chases other people's dreams just like Lucy tells him not to. The fucker was given every chance to not be a dumbass. Its an amazing show but… The writing/ story as a whole is super generic UNLIKE many of the old shows people compare it to like cowboy bebop or ghost in the shell. Those show/ movies did something new something very different at the time edgerunners DOES NOT. I just wish they didn't make David a fucking GONK who can't learn from those around him. Heres for hoping they make a season two that fixes these issues.
I watched it with the Japanese audio with English subtitles the first time through. I wanted to hear how the studio would cast the voice for the characters, hear how they wanted them to sound. Looking at the characters even while listening to the Japanese audio I could only cringe at the possible "stock VA" casting I could expect to hear from the English dub.
And for some of those characters it was exactly as I expected.
Otherwise there's probably too much going on visually to go in Subs only so I won't begrudge anyone who opts for the dub. When everything is a visual mile-a-minute you can't be slowing down to read the bottom four inches of the screen. And the real solution to my complaint would be for a broader pool of voice acting talent across the whole industry, which is too large a solution for one anime.
They put a lot of love in the English dialogue. It’s the work of CDPR and genuine to the company’s vision. I think it’s superior to the Japanese track because of that.
The most iconic character storyline in Pondsmith's Cyberpunk is probably Johnny Silverhand. In 1988 that story set the entire premise of Cyberpunk 2077, and did an amazing job in building the world. In only 12 pages in an RPG book. It doesn't take longer than that to tell a cyberpunk story, it shouldn't take longer. Even the overall genre, not just Pondsmith's brand. You can see a trend of ignoring long stories, tales of growth and so on. Here's your party of characters, they're really cool, lets see how long they last in this mess we got cooked up. Maybe some of them even make it through the scenario alive. But at least every cyberpunk gets to die in a memorable way. Life is cheap in Night City.
Also the english dub is where you hear some foreign accents and languages, appropriate lingo. I watched both and I really couldn't hear any of that authenticity coming across in the japanese voices. Not that it was bad, but definitely lacking in an important "cyberpunk way". You want to hear the dystopia in how people talk, the japanese dialogue seemed to just miss this mark. Of course you should watch the show at least once in both languages!
the ending BROKE ME AND GAVE ME SEVERE DEPRESSION dude 😭💔 the fact that trigger studios got us so attached to the characters and made EVERYBODY cry at the ending really just shows how great they are. they didn't need 200 -700 episodes like most shounen and other animes . in just 10 episodes , THIS ANIME IS OFFICIALY THE TOP 5 GREATEST ANIME EVER! Never seen a better anime than that this. and the one that have me PTSD worse than this 😭 except akame ga kill…
It is Anime of the Year! I loved it. I didnt expect much from this 10 episode anime and blew me away. Loved the characters, soundtracks, action and the story.
The Moon song gives me depression evey day. Perfect use of OST at the right scenario is a Big W for me. Brilliant execution!! I love the gore scenes even more, not censoring or any other bullshit.
I really love your editing style. It's not super fast-paced and it really enhances what you are actually saying. I especially love the technique you use where you fit multiple scenes of the show into one cut. Fantastic stuff.
