If you recall the start of this episode, you can see Maine running nonstop till he ends up in the middle of nowhere, at the end of the road. I think the road represents more than just an idea that he was "Never able to finish." On the contrary, it looked as if he could have kept pushing himself, so here's where the theory evolves. I like to think the road represented everything he could achieve as a human. Sure he could keep running into the desert, pushing himself past his mortal limits, but there would be nothing to gain from it. He had reached the end, he was in peak condition, and it wasn't enough. That's why in the vision he was completely Organic, not a lick of chrome on him. He knew if he wanted to get better, to be better, he needed to surpass the limits of the road. The road was his humanity, his hard work, and he had finally pushed himself to the top… and he wasn't satisfied. This mindset is what cost him his life, he didn't know how to stop.
I can't believe how no one talks about Maine being so calm in 0:23 he also has the look lost, he's in pain and at the same time already accepted his fate, his end. He just lost Dorio and still managed to honor her in his last sane moments, Maine will always be in my heart as one of the most human characters.
God. I’ve watched this scene over a 100 times already. Maine taking everyone out, Dorio is dead, and a final send off to maxtac. The music, the anger, the frustration of it all too much. One hell of a scene
The brief moment of lucidity as he knows what he has done and what is coming (MaxTac) is what makes this scene hit hard. It reminds me of terminal lucidity that dementia patients have before their death: dementia robbed their memories and their ability to rationalize but they're able to think clearly and remember things briefly just before they pass away.
I think this may be one of the only anime where it felt mandatory to watch it in dub due to the many different ethnicities of each character, alongside their different accents that could be heard in dub
At 2:52 when it cuts to the desert scene really fast, its possible to see that in Maine's allucination (probably his past or the place he grew up) David is running from Maine. Meaning David had a place in Maine's heart. You cannot see the soldiers or any other object that was close to them aside from Dorio's body previously when he was "preparing" her funeral. It's interesting to see that in this episode we saw many flashes from a young Maine. A very skinny and young Maine, running in the desert… showing us that Maine always "ran" after something. He went to Night City a skinny and poor kid from the desert (that's what I think ok), made a name for him and gathered a group that he could trust…. And after all that he still kept running, never knowing when to stop. And that probably was his demise… What a great character.
Maine is technically a piece of shit, went against his friends wishes and pulled her kid out of school into a life of crime opposite of what she wanted for him
@1:44 Maine says “you can’t do it YET” but the sub doesn’t include the “yet” part. That’s sad coz it shows that Maine believes David can be a great edge runner who can even fight against MaxTac one day. Great script.
This scene hit me so hard in the feels and the music fit this scene so well. Maine is one of my favorite characters in the series and was such a huge part of his development and so many other characters.
Holy crap they managed to actually hit you in the feels in within the span of 6 episodes. That’s less than what it takes for like a shit ton of animes and when animes attempt to get here they usually fall flat and you tend to not give a shit about the characters. Edge runners is just different.
@0:50 to me, that simple shot in the desert is such a great way of representing “the reaper”. What better way is there to represent death in this universe, than a small floating black glitched pixel in a cyber hallucination. Really gives you the feeling of fear for the unknown that comes with death.
After all the running Maine did, he reached the desert edge, and now death awaits him.
I really like they set Maine's past as a runner in a desert-like place outside the NC, it shows that Maine was a poor, skinny young man chasing his dream so he started his life as a edgerunner here, and also tells that inside of this big guy Maine, is still the same young man and keep running for his dream. However, he finally realized that he is about to be ended, his life, his dream, his love, his memory….the sky above that young man shortly flashed out with the explosion, imply that everything meaningful for Maine are gone at the moment he was blown up.
