“It’s not about saving humanity, it’s about saving yourself.” – Mike Pondsmith on Cyberpunk.
After the release of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, we’ve pondered over this quote and how the story and themes within the anime reflect on the genre. This is what makes it so great.

13.06.2023I think it’s half true though, as Pondsmith would later write that yeah the stakes aren’t global, but saving yourself isn’t always as selfish as it seems. Sometimes it means saving the people you love, sometimes it means kicking the shit out of a corp for your group of ragtag friends. Those people become a part of who you are, and so it becomes essential that it’s your punks against the world.
David didn’t have a downfall, he crashed right where he wanted to be. He saved who he loved, no matter how selfish that might seem to others.

07.06.2023"cyberpunk isn't about saving people it's about saving yourself" the fuk it isnt, I save any npc in the game in 1 min ever since becoming overpowered, I legit beat night City and the power it destroys people with out a second thought the mere thought of night City breaking people is stupid because I just demonstrated in my playthrough that all you need is a pistol and a pistol build and you can fix night City in a mere hour, and a cowboy hat and no robot crap on me since I want to be human than resort myself to becoming a mere machine like smasher who I killed with one shot of my comrade hammer

06.06.2023My V gave up saving Johnny to save himself. Why? Because he had to. He had a family now-Panam and the rest- and it wasn’t about his fame anymore. If he hadn’t changed, I think he would have. I can’t help but not regret it. Even if he only lives for half a year…he beat the city of dead dreams.

06.06.2023The world is the main character, you’re just a side character that is a casualty of the side effects of the world. If you don’t save yourself, the world will chew you up and spit you out. David was careless and didn’t have a dream or a goal. He just wanted money and fame, in the end he chose Lucy’s dream as his own and she got it. But she’s alone now. All because of his carelessness.

David Gancho
06.06.2023Yes but he also failed because he try to solve others problems without listening to there problems, his mom wanned him to study and have a safe life he became a edgerunner, Mane in the end wanned him to run from that life that's why he said "run kid, you are fast, that's what you do best" and he became what Mane didn't wanned him to become and for last Lucy wanned to stay with him from the start and wanned him to live even if it cost the travel to the moon and he didn't least and he end up dead. He failed because he try to help without see what the people around him really wanned from him and many of us are like that, we give help in our own way not in the way that others need.

06.06.2023I wish they would make more stories inside the cyberpunk edgerunner universe

03.06.2023The question is, Is saving yourself upholding your own morals and values, or simply surviving, prolonging the inevitable.
I think in Edgerunner David did save himself.
TheInstinctWithin
03.06.2023I feel like that depends strongly on what you define as "saving yourself" because I genuinely believe that David desired nothing more than to just keep at least ONE of his friends/family safe, which in turn saved HIM from crushing sadness and despair. He made sure Lucy got away and got to enjoy the moon, he laughed, because he won. The city did not get to take any more from him.

03.06.2023Ironically though in cyberpunk the game you being selfless to help the aldecados leave Night City is the good ending in the game
Dan Garcia
03.06.2023Because how in the fuck could we possibly save humanity if we can't even save ourselves?
Moist Von Lipwig
03.06.2023it depends on how you define "yourself". a large enough definition of "self", and almost any act of altruism can be seen through the lens of "self-interest".

03.06.2023My personal belief for what happens in cyberpunk 2077 is that v is is achieving enlightenment throughout the game and each ending represents a different version of enlightenment. for example the ending where Johnny takes over your body is representing Nirvana AKA spiritual death of course most of the evidence I'm using is the Zen master questline, a little bit of the prisoner side quest and the underlying theme of Johnny and v soul. This is why v is able to beat Adam smasher so easily is because he is much more spiritually aligned with himself by the end of the game then Adam smasher will ever be overcoming Adam in ways David never could

03.06.2023I'll comment, because i can't upvote or downvote. Edgerunners hurt the soul too much

02.06.2023David always put others before him, he would die before letting his close ones die. But after Maine died he felt obligated to take it to the next level for Maine's sake since it's what he built. Very sad ending and it will never leave my head lol.

01.06.2023So pretty much there is no possible good ending? Like David survives alone because he couldn’t save anyone or Lucy stays alive achieves her dream but loses David and the gang in the process?

01.06.2023You can tell edge runners is the most cyberpunk I hadn’t played the game and on the day I did my friend told me to watch the show to get a better idea of the world and I did the two are like night and day the game is so pg compared to edge runners

01.06.2023Personally I think Edgerunners isn't that good of a cyberpunk show in any sense. It lacks most humanist elements, glosses over the message trying to be conveyed in favour of 'bloodletting' and accentuating dangerous stereotypes around mental health and lacks the one thing Cyberpunk needs which is a rebellious spirit. Edgerunners is just Doomer Propaganda masquerading as rebellious Cyberpunk. It perpetuates the system in its own way and does more harm than good. But I can see why people like it.
