Live-action movies and series have been a scarlet letter on the gaming industry for decades. But now after 60+ years, the curse is nearly over because Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is absolutely phenomenal and has virtually revived Cyberpunk 2077. So today I want to take a look at Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and discuss how this anime managed to bring back nearly 45k players to a game famously shit on by the video game community.

26.05.2023Btw quick correction about the 110k players bit, it was over a million when adding PS and Xbox and elsewhere as noted by CDPR on their Twitter, just obviously can't see the stats from other places that are not Steam.

26.05.2023First video I’ve seen try to go into the phenomenon that happened hear.
I’ve become a recluse in terms of taking opinions on media and experiences, though I still enjoy critiquing them.
I haven’t played Cyberpunk2077, I had only heard of the RPG when I was younger.
I wasn’t super excited about the release but I was happy to see something truly different, genre defining and unique, even if it felt like a niche cult following.
Vampire the Masquerade always impressed me like that.
Same with the Dune and Predator franchises, you don’t get many games, and releases are rare, and when you do get something you’re just excited to have it, even if it needs work and love.
Especially after watching the release, seeing the media focus on and shame creators after oversimplifying the problems, the updates, the constant improvement, the modding community, and then Edgerunners, poetically proving they had in them the whole time from the start, even if nobody thought they did.
Now I’m getting videos like this and let’s play’s a year or older with all these little Easter eggs that were there whole time, people who don’t usually watch anime or animated anything cry in reaction videos online.
I think Cyberpunk is what you make of it, just like life

26.05.2023I just put Cyberpunk 2077 on my wishlist. Now, I'm just going to wait for it to go on sale.

26.05.2023Seeing it as a series based on a video game is missing a large part of the picture. It was a table top role playing game decades ago. The setting, the stories, the situations are all the result of decades of lore to pull from.
To an old table top RPer like me, the game was nostalgia. I'd spent plenty of time in Night City, rode with nomads, struggled with cyberpsychosis, and heard the stories about Silverhand and Alt since the late 90's. With a core book and a stack of supplement books up to my knee, roleplayers like me have been familiar with this setting for a long time, with more lore than the game or series would barely be able to scratch the surface.
Other movies/shoes based on a game had nowhere near as much lore or history to draw upon. Mario is a platformer with a story that could be explained in a single sentence. HALO is an FPS with a weak story made to give some weak reason to be shooting waves of enemies. There was not a worthy amount of lore to pull from to justify any kind of worthwhile movie or series to either, which made it a weak cash grab. Even Witcher had a relatively miniscule amount of lore for the writers to work with by comparison.

26.05.2023There are things that cripple CP2077 gameplay. First is awfull AI, second is bad game balance. High-level netrunner is unstopable. CDPR completely forget about enemy countermesures when they were doing quickhacks. No ICE programs, no additional minigame, no cyberwere diversity for the enemy. Very rarely we see position reveal or counterhacks and thats it.

26.05.2023Okay but to be fair it's not just a videogame adaptation.

26.05.2023Lol. Wtf with that intro? The Mario Show is actually good. Certainly not as good as the games, but it's still watchable

24.05.2023You revive a game by giving us flying cars like you were supposed to in the first place.

24.05.2023It happened with The Witcher 3 too. It revived The Witcher 3 too. The Witcher 3 peaked at a new Steam concurrent players record.

24.05.2023I mean yeah, I bought a copy of cyberpunk after watching

24.05.2023Let me say. Cyberpunk 2077 is finally a proper game like 2 years after release. Performance for most system easyily got doubled and there are almost no bugs from what i have seen. I think the map/menu is still a bit funky, but the major problems obviously had priority. So basically. The game has always been good, but poor schedule, hype and pressure. Edgerunners released at the right time where people are compelled to try out/come back to a finoshed game.

24.05.2023The thing with Edgerunners is even though it is short the characters are likeable, the expression from each character is well done. The amount of words they say and how they express makes you more attached to them than most of cyberpunk 2077's characters. I'm currently replaying 2077 for the third time (going for a lucy/david build.) and the characters that had the most impact atm is jackie, misty, vik, johnny, and judy, even then some of them have a small amount of dialogue for most of the game, but they become someone you want to fight for. You can see that under the bugs and glitches there is passion there, the world looks and feels more alive now, the added weapons and gigs have now been tied in with lore. However Edgerunners was the injection that restarted the hype for it and boy did it need this.

24.05.2023David headed to school was partially relatable growing up in nyc. When I lived in Harlem and had to travel almost 2 hours to my “ better “ school in queens I’d walk past similar things at dam near 5:30 am every morning. Homeless people, degenerates, crime scenes etc

24.05.2023Cyberpunk is fixed and it’s only getting better can’t wait for multiplayer

24.05.2023It’s to bad that so many people wrote off cyberpunk 2077 because of its buggy and rushed launch. And also forget that they cried at the top of their lungs to CDPR to not delay the game again. Pure irony. The gameplay was never the point to cyberpunk 2077, it was the story. Play 2077 for its emotional roller coaster. The cyberpunk genre (blade runner, neromancer, cyberpunk 2020, etc) has a morale.

24.05.2023Passion is a big reason why the anime succeeded but it's not all since there was also a lot of talent involved. Passion alone is not enough to produce great art. The script is really solid but especially the director Hiroyuki Imaishi is a visionary artist with a spark of genius, as he has demonstrated again and again in all of his anime.
Ryan Duty
24.05.2023What's even better, this is the best adaptation of a TTRPG. Every DnD adaptation has been mostly bad to horrendous. I hope they have a 2nd season of this anime planned. This is coming from someone who doesn't like a lot of anime.

23.05.2023The anime doesn't determine the game

23.05.2023It wasn’t just hat the anime was good, it was a good patch and a DLC announcement happened at the same time.
It’s a bummer I won’t get to play any of it. I play on Stadia and it’s shutting down in January

23.05.2023I think if cyber punk wasn't plagued with the glitches and bugs at launch it would have been an awesome game I'm playing it now for the first time and I'm loving it … Especially love Jackie finally a awesome Hispanic character in the spotlight I can relate to besides David of course

23.05.2023This is how video game shows/movies should be done not rebooting the series, retelling, or just ignoring it. It should connect to the game while fleshing out and expanding on the world with new characters and a new story
NOHERO 1
23.05.2023Everyone mentions the in game locations but what I love is the fact most players do just drop off the top of stairs onto some trash and you see those BD addicts everywhere
I really enjoy those details too much

23.05.2023I didn't play 2077 when it came out because of how much bad press it got. Wrote it off and said I'd never touch it even though I love CDRP and The Witcher. Never thought about it again. Enter Edgerunners. I haven't been able to watch other anime or even shows since I finished it and then I watched it through a second time again and it devastated me the same way. What gets me is how well they do word building. It's nearly effortless how well it's communicated. I saw the game had a new patch coming out and I saw it at the local shop for $15 so why not? And I am sooooo happy I did. The game isn't a masterpiece or anything but that same level of word building and side stories are just great. The main story is even pretty cool. No heavy handed exposition or anything like that, just environmental storytelling and conversational cues. Loving the game and haven't had any bugs in 30+ hours.

22.05.2023They got lucky to not only get Studio Trigger on board to make the Anime but also the very best among them in the lead, and also the reason why they denied all "creative" input from CDPR and such, which was the right choice of them. Another director might have backed down, and we would never have had this ultra gore and Rebecca.
CDPR deserves no praise from this, because they were trying to make the show less of what it is/was. Also shows they got people amidst them creating problems still, and will likely have a negative impact on future projects, not to mention half or more of the devs who made Witcher games great, are gone as well.
Studio Trigger + Edgerunners Anime = Legendary.
CDPR Cyberpunk = subpar / average.
Raven Whiteduck
22.05.2023Cyberpunk as a concept is amazing and this shows just how good it can be, I hope CDPR doesn't give up on this, I hope they try again and knock it out of the park next time, also don't hype it up as much

22.05.2023Someones know in what point will be a good time to watch the series? I should finish first the whole campaing or after 20 hours in the game or a especific mission to see the referemces in the series?

22.05.2023I'm glad to see Cyberpunk developers actually working on the game since edgerunners.

22.05.2023Nice video keep it up brother

22.05.2023Bit disappointed the video doesn’t mention the work the CDPR put into the game since release especially with patches 1.5 and 1.6
The show brought people back but they stayed and the buzz continued because they have turned the game around a lot.

22.05.2023CDPR is full of world-class talents. They will prove it with the Phantom Liberty and the next Witcher.

21.05.2023How to revive your bad game,
Step 1: make a game with good world building with a ton of bugs
Step 2: make an anime based on your glitchy game
Step 3: Give everyone depression
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Profit
Jordan Lamb
21.05.2023I played the game when it first came out. Got past the prologue, did some side missions and stopped. Edgerunners was amazing and I knew I was missing out on an interesting world so I've played it again and holy shit. It's great. I want more
