This anime felt like a better done Guilty Crown. Gritty, cruel, capitalist haven. Superpower meant for another. Unhinged leader figure. Dangerous love interest. Powerful morals & themes. Loved it
I hadnt played the game, it left me empty after i ended it, everything goes to shit so fast, but it also made sense, also loved the way the characters talked to each other, it felt natural, not some "i talk, ok now you talk" that anime nowadays has, a nice flow i guess
This show hurt so bad. It's so beautiful. Trigger at it's best. Almost all of their shows are about "the indomitable human spirit" but frequently flub the landing of that message. This show didn't. This show is so brutally tragic and also shockingly poignant. This is going to stick with me for years.
It does feel like a lot of the pain comes from taking on the dreams of others though. Defining your own goals might have ended up without quite so much tragic pain.
Great media analysis as always. Not sure if anyone pointed this out yet but when Maine died David recovered his grenade launcher arm and used it as his own the same way he always had his mom's Jacket with him.
Literally just finished watching the anime and this really captures the central theme so well in such a condensed manner, well done! The grim and tragic reality of the setting was a really fantastic contrast to the central themes of altruism and dreaming towards some kind of lofty goal, even if it seemed naïve and unattainable. It was a simply told tale in many ways, but that made it no less potent, and you definitely emphasized what the narrative was all about!
I liked your video more than the anime. Which you should take as a compliment. I think the show (like the game) was overhyped and underdelivered. Sure looked pretty though!
Loved this anime. Proves that CD Project RED DID have something there with their world that people can build off of. I really have to give props to Trigger for making a series where I KNEW how it was gonna end but enjoyed the ride so much I would watch it again anyway.
The way I see it, edgerunners is a story about hubris. Davids mother tells david that she wishes the best for his son, that she wants to see him at the top of arasaka tower.
After her death, david uses her words as a coping mechanism to allow himself to believe that hes special, that no matter what, he'll make it through hell because hes special. But thats why he dies in the end. Instead of actually sitting down with lucy, telling her his thoughts and listening to her thoughts about why she doesnt want david to go edgerunning, he ignores all warnings from the doc, rebecca, and lucy herself and instead keeps upgrading and upgrading, forgetting why maine died in the first place.
He could have prevented the tragedies in episode 10 had he communicated with lucy, his friends, and the doc, and thats why i think that edgerunners is good, but its a good tragedy.
I never watch your videos. I subscribed to you I think a few years ago after watching one video. I subscribed because I think I would get along with you
I don't agree with this theory but it's interesting that not many people consider that the ending of Lucy going to the "moon" could be a result of her being in a BD 👀
So I wanted to know if David achieved his moms dream because at the end he said something like “look mom I made it I’m at the top of Arasaka tower”.Something like that .Or was that just his cyberpsychosis affecting him ?
The lad couldn't catch a break. If you played the game, you can order his drink. But it has two things going for it when viewing the anime. 1) the fact a drink is named after him, you know his story doesn't end well. Goes out with a bang, but still goes out. 2) Half the drink ingredients is a ni-cola. David HATED bubbly drinks like soda. Just like how he had no personal dream goals and only lived on the legacy of others/pushing for their dreams, someone else had to craft the man's honoring drink. It was most likely the fact he was so innocent and young for the first few years of his tenure bein' a merc, not REALLY knowing his personal tastes in drinks.
